"SuperDad" Superman & Lois Recaps: "What Lies Beneath," "The Ties That Bind" & "The Thing in the Mines"

 Superman & Lois

As you all know, I was a big fan of season one of "Superman & Lois." It was a great show that may be one of the best DC shows that the CW has produced. I said what I said. So, I think it goes without saying that I am excited to find out where they are going to take things in season two. We are covering three episodes in this post, so let's get to it.

Road to No Way Home: Venom

 "Venom" (2018)

It was only a matter of time until Venom got his own solo movie. Much like Wolverine and Deadpool, Venom is a character that came to prominence in the Nineties and if the latter characters can have their solo moment to shine, why not Venom. I always thought that Spider-Man would somehow factor in to a Venom solo film, but with the MCU utilizing Spider-Man, Sony decided that they would start their own Spider-Man movie universe... sans Spider-Man. What better way to anchor that than with Venom... I guess.

Principal photography began on "Venom" in October 2017 and ended in January 2018. The film stars Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock/Venom, Michelle Williams as Annie Weying, Riz Ahmed as Carlton Drake/Riot, Jenny Slate as Dora Skirth, Scott Haze as Roland Treece and Reid Scott as Dan Lewis. The film was written by Jeff Pinkner, Scott Rosenberg and Kelly Marcel. It was directed by Ruben Fleischer. "Venom" premiered on October 5, 2018.

The film stars Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, Jamie Foxx as Max Dillon/Electro, Dane DeHaan as Harry Osborn/Green Goblin, Campbell Scott as Richard Parker, Embeth Davidtz as Mary Parker, Felicity Jones as Felicia Hardy, Colm Feore as Donald Menken, Paul Giamatti as Alexei Sytsevich/The Rhino, Chris Cooper as Norman Osborn and Sally Field as May Parker. The film was written by Jeff Pinkner, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. It was directed by Marc Webb. "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" premiered on May 2, 2014.

"Road to No Way Home" Re-Watch: The Amazing Spider-Man

 "The Amazing Spider-Man" (2012)

After it was decided that "Spider-Man 4" wasn't going to move forward, Sony immediately started working on rebooting the franchise. And, you know, why not start at the beginning and re-tell Spider-Man's origin? We just had a movie that told his origin ten years ago. It's time for another, right?

Principal photography on "The Amazing Spider-Man" began in December 2010 and concluded in April 2011. The film stars Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, Rhys Ifans as Dr. Curt Connors/The Lizard, Denis Leary as Captain George Stacy, Campbell Scott as Richard Parker, Embeth Davidtz as Mary Parker, Irrfan Khan as Rajit Ratha, Martin Sheen as Ben Parker and Sally Field as May Parker. The film was written by James Vanderbilt, Alvin Sargent and Steve Kloves. It was directed by Marc Webb. "The Amazing Spider-Man" premiered on July 3, 2012.

"Hated and Feared" Re-Watch: "The Dark Phoenix" Parts 3 & 4: "The Dark Phoenix" & "The Fate of the Phoenix"

 X-Men

Honestly, after re-watching "X-Men"s adaptation of "The Dark Phoenix Saga" and how masterfully they do it, I have this to say to any future live action adaptations. If you can't do it like this, then don't do it at all. Let's jump into these last two episodes.

"Road to No Way Home" Re-Watch: Spider-Man 3

 "Spider-Man 3" (2007)

The original "Spider-Man" trilogy with Tobey Maguire concludes with the much derided "Spider-Man 3." If there was ever an argument for less studio meddling in a movie, it's this one. Sam Raimi had just made the best "Spider-Man" movie, so why not just trust him to do what he has been doing and not force him to shoehorn in a popular villain that he hadn't planned on using.

Principal photography on "Spider-Man 3" began in January 2006 and concluded in October 2006. The film stars Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane Watson, James Franco as Harry Osborn/New Goblin, Thomas Haden Church as Flint Marko/The Sandman, Topher Grace as Edward "Eddie" Brock, Jr./Venom, Bryce Dallas Howard as Gwen Stacy, James Cromwell as Captain George Stacy, Rosemary Harris as May Parker and J.K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson. The film was written by Sam Raimi, Ivan Raimi and Alvin Sargent. It was directed by Sam Raimi. "Spider-Man 3" premiered on May 4, 2007.

A Long Time Ago, During the Clone Wars: "Massacre," "Bounty," "Brothers" & "Revenge"

 Star Wars The Clone Wars

I feel like one of the biggest things "The Clone Wars" did is bring Darth Maul back into the Star Wars universe. He's making his debut in the series. Here we go.

"Last Son" Re-Watch: "Bizarro's World" & "The Hand of Fate"

 Superman the Animated Series

I know that this is a Superman post, but I have to mention the passing of the one person who will always be Batman for a generation of people: Kevin Conroy. Conroy passed after a short cancer battle on November 10, 2022 at the age of 66. My heart is still broken. I really started to give this blog attention when I decided to re-watch "Batman: The Animated Series" and a lot of that had to do with wanting to hear the definitive Batman actor. I can't believe that Batman is dead. RIP, sir.

"Big Shots" Re-Watch: "Jupiter Jazz" Parts 1 & 2

 Cowboy Bebop

With this two-parter we have reached the midway point of the series and honestly these episodes feel different. And with their placement, it makes sense that they would. Let's get to it.

"Road to No Way Home" Re-Watch: Spider-Man 2

"Spider-Man 2" (2004)

The sequel to Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man" came out a short two years after the original, but despite the relatively quick turnaround, we got an assured masterpiece that is the best of the eight "Spider-Man" movies that have been on the big screen. I said what I said. Not only that, it's one of the best superhero movies of all-time. Again, I said what I said.

Principal photography on "Spider-Man 2" began April 2003 and concluded in December 2003. The film stars Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane Watson, James Franco as Harry Osborn, Alfred Molina as Dr. Otto Octavius/Doctor Octopus, Rosemary Harris as May Parker, Donna Murphy as Rosie Octavius, Daniel Gillies as John Jameson and J.K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson. The film was written by Alvin Sargent from a story by Alfred Gough, Miles Millar and Michael Chabon. It was directed by Sam Raimi. "Spider-Man 2" premiered on June 30, 2004.

"Hated and Feared" Re-Watch: "The Dark Phoenix" Parts 1 & 2: "Dazzled" & "The Inner Circle"

We made it to the Dark Phoenix everyone. The triumphant return of Jean Grey to "X-Men: The Animated Series." It has been six long episodes but she's finally back. She's still possessed by the Phoenix and she's ready to go bad. Let's get started.

"Hawkguy" Hawkeye Recaps: "Echoes" & "Partners, Am I Right?"

Hawkeye

Is it weird that Clint Barton is maybe the least interesting thing in this series? Is that just me? Let's jump right into it.

"Road to No Way Home" Re-Watch: "Spider-Man"

"Spider-Man" (2002)

In my MCU re-watch, we are rapidly approaching "Spider-Man: No Way Home" which connects the MCU Tom Holland Spider-Man to his cinematic counterparts, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. So, I thought why not re-watch the Spidey movies that came before. The Maguire movies are the ones that I'm more familiar with. They came out shortly after I graduated high school and I think "Spider-Man 2" is a high water mark for comic book films.

The first "Spider-Man" movie came out in 2002, shortly after the success of the first "X-Men" movie in 2000. The thing I most remember about this movie prior to release was the teaser trailer. It featured a mostly unseen Spider-Man webbing a bank robbers helicopter between the Twin Towers. It was quickly pulled from theaters following the 9/11 terror attacks. I remember seeing it once at the drive-in and because it was pulled so quickly it's become something of a cinematic urban legend until the point I wondered if it was a Mandela effect situation. I just re-watched it and it is surreal and kind of chilling seeing the towers. I'm linking it here so you can watch for yourself if you've never seen it.

Principal photography on"Spider-Man" began in January 2001 and ended in July 2001. The film stars Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Willem Dafoe as Norman Osobrn/Green Goblin, Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane Watson, James Franco as Harry Osborn, Cliff Robertson as Ben Parker, Rosemary Harris as May Parker and J.K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson. The film was written by David Koepp. It was directed by Sam Raimi. "Spider-Man" premiered on May 3, 2002.

A Long Time Ago, During the Clone Wars: "Deception," "Friends and Enemies," "The Box" & "Crisis on Naboo"

 Star Wars The Clone Wars

As we head towards the end of the Clone Wars and the implementation of Order 66, the show is not afraid to get a little grittier and darker and I'm not upset about it. Let's get into it.

"In the Name of the Moon" Re-Watch: "Usagi's Parental Love: The Curry Romance Triangle" & "The Beach, the Island & a Vacation: The Guardians' Break"

 Sailor Moon R

The second episode in today's post is the only episode of "Sailor Moon R" that DiC didn't dub back in the day. And once you watch it, you will understand why, I think. Let's get started.

"Last Son" Re-Watch: "World's Finest" Parts 1, 2 & 3

 Superman: The Animated Series

I feel like this is the moment we have all been waiting for ever since the Kents mentioned Batman back in the premiere trilogy of episodes. Batman finally makes his appearance and the two meet face to face for the first time. I remember shortly after these episodes aired they were edited together and released on DVD as "The Batman/Superman Movie." Let's get to it.

"foX-Men" Re-Watch: The New Mutants

 "The New Mutants" (2020)

We took a little break but we are back for what I initially thought was the final of the Fox X-Men movie, but it was recently announced that Hugh Jackman's Wolverine would be appearing in "Deadpool 3." "The New Mutants" had a super troubled production and came out during the height of the pandemic. So, it was a huge success! Just kidding. It bombed.

Principal photography on "The New Mutants" began in July 2017 and ended in September 2017, with a projected release date of April 2018. Then, Disney bought 20th Century Fox and that release date just kept shifting. There were supposed to be re-shoots but those were cancelled and the film was completed as is in March 2020. The film stars Alice Braga as Dr. Cecelia Reyes, Adam Beach as William Lonestar, Blu Hunt as Danielle "Dani" Moonstar/Mirage, Anya Taylor-Joy as Illyana Rasputin/Magik, Maisie Williams as Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane, Henry Zaga as Roberto "Bobby" DaCosta/Sunspot and Charlie Heaton as Sam Guthrie/Cannonball. The film was written by Josh Boone and Knate Lee. It was directed by Josh Boone. "The New Mutants" premiered on August 28, 2020.

"Hated and Feared" Re-Watch: "Savage Land, Savage Heart" Parts 1 & 2

 X-Men

The headline here is not the two episodes we are covering in this post. It is that with the next post we will be covering the four part "Dark Phoenix" Saga. I'm pretty stoked. I may enjoy the animated series take on Dark Phoenix more than the Phoenix. But for now, let's get into this two-part return to the Savage Land.

Monday, October 17, 2022

"Hawkguy" Hawkeye Recaps: "Never Meet Your Heroes" & "Hide and Seek"

 Hawkeye

Our trek through Phase 4 continues with the next Disney+ series. It's a six episode series that centers on Clint Barton and Kate Bishop. Phase 4 is continuing on focusing on some of the original Avengers that maybe didn't get a lot of play. This series is loosely based on the "Hawkeye" comic that was written and drawn by Matt Fraction and David Aja. If you really enjoyed this series, than I would definitely pick up this run. When "Hawkeye" debuted, they released a cost effective trade paperback that you can order from Amazon here.

"Killing for Peace" Peacemaker Recaps: "Stop Dragon My Heart Around" & "It's Cow or Never"

I am not sure if I've brought this up before but each episode of "Peacemaker" has a fun little after credits scene so I hope you've been watching them. If not, go back and do it! You won't be disappointed. Let's get to it.

 Sailor Moon R

We finally get to see Mako and Minako's new transformations. Mini rant here. "Sailor Moon" does this a lot. It feels like Rei and Ami get their own episodes, but they always put Mako and Minako together. They deserve their own episodes too!! Rant over. Let's get into it.

Re-Visiting the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Eternals

 "Eternals" (2021)

When Marvel initially announced that they were going to make a movie about the Eternals, there was a collective, "Huh?" Even comics folks weren't sure who these immortals were. They were created by legendary comic creator Jack Kirby. I've always felt like the Eternals were Kirby making New Gods for Marvel. They are powerful and live forever. And Marvel nabbed Chloé Zhao to write and direct who ended up winning an Oscar between the time that "Eternals" was shot and was released. That's nothing to sneeze at.

Principal photography began in July 2019 and ended in February 2020. The film stars Gemma Chan as Sersi, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Barry Keoghan as Druig, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Harish Patel as Karun, Kit Harrington as Dane Whitman, Salma Hayek as Ajak and Angelina Jolie as Thena. The film was written by Chloé Zhao, Patrick Burleigh, Ryan Firpo and Kaz Firpo. It was directed by Chloé Zhao. "Eternals" premiered on November 5, 2021.

"Last Son" Re-Watch: "Solar Power" & "Brave New Metropolis"

 Superman The Animated Series

The past few episodes of "Superman: The Animated Series" have been kind of lackluster to the point where I wasn't necessarily super excited to watch. Will things turn around with these two episodes? Let's find out.

Sunday, September 18, 2022

"Big Shots" Re-Watch: "Sympathy for the Devil" & "Heavy Metal Queen"

 Cowboy Bebop

The two episodes we are dealing with today. They are very similar but different at the same time. Why don't we waste no time and jump right in.
