Re-Visiting the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3

"Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3" (2023)

James Gunn went on a wild ride when it came to writing and directing "Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3." In 2018, Disney fired Gunn after controversial comments that he made on Twitter re-surfaced. The outrage from fans and cast members was swift. Gunn was eventually re-hired, but I think that firing is what led him to become the new DC movie universe guru. It was after he was fired that he made "The Suicide Squad" and "Peacemaker." But luckily, before moving on to his new job, Gunn was able to conclude his "Guardians" trilogy. I don't even want to imagine a world where he wasn't able to do that.

Principal photography on "Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3" began in November 2021 and concluded in May 2022. The film stars Chris Pratt as Peter Quill/Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Pom Klementieff as Mantis, Vin Diesel as Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, Will Poulter as Adam Warlock, Sean Gunn as Kraglin, Chukwudi Iwuji as the High Evolutionary, Linda Cardellini as Lylla, Nathan Fillion as Master Karja and Sylvester Stallone as Stakar Ogord. The film was written and directed by James Gunn. "Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3" premiered on May 5, 2023.

A Long Time Ago During the Reign of the Empire: "Kanan: The Last Padawan" #2-3 & "Darth Vader" Vol 2 #1-7

 Star Wars

We are heading into the darkest time in the history of Star Wars. Order 66 has been executed. The majority of the Jedi have been decimated and the few remaining are in hiding. Emperor Palpatine is working to solidify his power with his new apprentice. These comic series tell stories from the start of this new era from two distinct perspectives. If you're a "Star Wars Rebels" fan (and honestly, how could you not be), you are familiar with Kanan Jarrus. This is his story when he was still Caleb Dume, Jedi Padawan on the run. Then, we pick up with the former Anakin Skywalker, now Darth Vader, after his resurrection post battle on Mustafar. This is Vader before he was one of the most feared men in the galaxy. These are stories that we haven't heard before. And the reason why I think these ancillary comics and books exist. Let's get to it.

"I Am the Moon" Re-Watch: "Making New Friends: Chibi Moon's Adventure" & "I Want Power: Mako Lost in Doubt"

 Sailor Moon S

We only got a little bit of Chibi-Usa at the end of the last episode but she's back in full force in the first episode of this post. We get a Mako focused episode for the second episode which I feel like we haven't had for a while. Let's get to it.

"Totally Schway" Re-Watch: "Hidden Agenda" & "Bloodsport"

 Batman Beyond

I feel like I'm being hard on "Batman Beyond?" Maybe too hard. I do like it but it's been a while since I've watched. Maybe things just get better later on? Maybe the movie is just so good that goodwill extends to the show? Let's get to it.

"The Truth Is Out There" Re-Watch: "Redux" & "Redux II"

 The X-Files

The fifth season of "The X-Files" premiered on November 2, 1997. It was a big season for the show. It was the first time the season was pre-planned, which is wild to think about. The fifth season was leading up to the first feature length "X-Files" movie that was set to be released in the summer of 1998. Originally, the fifth season of the show was supposed to be the last and it was going to transition to a movie series, but the show as so lucrative that it continued on. The movie was shot during the summer hiatus in 1997. Due to the need for re-shoots, there are several episodes in the fifth season where David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson don't appear at all or appear very little. It was the last season of the show that was filmed in Vancouver, British Columbia. Production moved to Los Angeles with the sixth season because Duchovny and Anderson wanted to be closer to home.

While this season was mapped out, it still feels like there are some wild left turns and season five features a lot of memorable episodes from the series. There is a black and white episode. There is an episode co-written by Stephen King. There is a classic episode about vampires. This may be one of the shortest seasons of the show, clocking in at 20 episodes, but it packs a lot and takes a lot of big swings. Let's get into it.

"We Used to Be Friends" Re-Watch: "Donut Run" & "Rashard and Wallace Go to White Castle"

 Veronica Mars

"One Angry Veronica" was the season two midseason finale and honestly after watching the first episode of this recap, I kind of think that they should have flip flopped them. Let's get into it.

Into the DC Murderverse: SHAZAM! Fury of the Gods

"SHAZAM! Fury of the Gods" (2023)

There are maybe like four movies in the DC Murderverse that I enjoy and "SHAZAM!" was one of them. There was just something about it that differentiated it. It didn't take itself it too seriously. It wasn't relentlessly dark. It had Zachary Levi in it. I was excited when I heard they were making a sequel. Apparently, I wasn't excited enough to see it in theaters, but that is neither here nor there.

Principal photography on "SHAZAM! Fury of the Gods" began in May 2021 and concluded in August 2021. The film stars Zachary Levi and Asher Angel as Billy Batson/Shazam, Jack Dylan Grazer and Adam Brody as Freddy Freeman, Helen Mirren as Hespera, Lucy Liu as Kalypso, Rachel Zegler as Anthea/Anne, Ross Butler and Ian Chen as Eugene Choi, D.J. Cotrona and Jovan Armand as Pedro Pena, Grace Caroline Currey as Mary Bromfield, Meagan Goode and Faithe Herman as Darla Dudley and Djimon Hounsou as Shazam. The film was written by Henry Gayden and Chris Morgan. It was directed by David F. Sandberg. "SHAZAM! Fury of the Gods" premiered on March 17, 2023.

"To Me, My X-Men" X-Men '97 Recaps: "Remember It" & "Lifedeath" Part 2

 X-Men '97

This is it. If you've watched "X-Men '97," and you should have, you know that episode five is where shit really hits the fan. I wasn't sure if watching it the second time it would hurt me less emotionally, but it hurt me just as much. If you're not an "X-Men" comic reader, I'll give you a little background. The massacre that happens on Genosha calls back to Grant Morrison's "New X-Men" #115 when Cassandra Nova unleashes wild Sentinels on the mutant nation of Genosha and they slaughter more than sixteen million mutants. The Adversary made their first appearance in "Uncanny X-Men" #188. Forge used his shamanic abilities to summon the Adversary when his company was slain during the Vietnam War. So if you're looking for some extra reading, check those out. Otherwise, let's head in to the back half of this season.

Re-Visiting the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania

"Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" (2023)

Phase Five of the MCU officially kicked off with the threequel of the "Ant-Man and the Wasp" franchise. I thought that was a strange choice when it was officially announced. It didn't seem like the franchise would be the thing that would be the jumping off point for the arrival of Kang. But, that may not really matter anymore because of the Jonathan Majors of it all.

Principal photography on "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" began at the end of July 2021 and ended November 2021. The film stars Paul Rudd as Scott Lang/Ant-Man, Evangeline Lilly as Hope van Dyne/The Wasp, Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conqueror, Kathryn Newton as Cassie Lang, David Dastmalchian as Veb, Katy O'Brian as Jentora, William Jackson Harper as Quaz, Bill Murray as Lord Krylar, Michelle Pfeiffer as Janet van Dyne/Wasp, Corey Stoll as Darren Cross/M.O.D.O.K. and Michael Douglas as Hank Pym/Ant-Man. The film was written by Jeff Loveness. It was directed by Peyton Reed. "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" was released on February 17, 2023.

A Long Time Ago as the Clone Wars Comes to an End: "Age of Republic" & "Revenge of the Sith"

Star Wars

We have reached the end of the Clone Wars and as we reach the end of the Clone Wars that also means that the Republic has come to an end and the Empire will rise. The majority of the Jedi will fall to Order 66 and the man they thought would be the Chosen One. Brothers will clash. Lovers will fall apart. The darkest time in the history of the galaxy will begin. We are going to start off with a collection of one-shot comics spotlighting key characters of the prequels that occur throughout the prequel era. Then, we'll move on to the end of Anakin Skywalker and the rise of Darth Vader with the novelization of "Revenge of the Sith." Let's get to it!

Into the DC Murderverse: Black Adam

 "Black Adam" (2022)

It's been a while since we took a trip through the DC Murderverse. I think the last time we did was when I covered the first season of "Peacemaker." Since then, the Murderverse has officially been abandoned. Filming is well under way for "Superman Legacy" the first film in the new continuity from James Gunn. We just recently saw the first official photo of David Corenswet in his Superman costume. I'm not going to say I'm excited, but maybe cautiously optimistic. We've got five movies to go to finish off this era of DC and two of them I haven't seen. So that will be fun for everyone.

Principal photography on "Black Adam" began in April 2021 and concluded in August 2021. The film stars Dwayne Johnson as Teth Adam/Black Adam, Aldis Hodge as Carter Hall/Hawkman, Noah Centineo as Albert "Al" Rothstein/Atom Smasher, Sarah Shahi as Adrianna Tomasz, Marwan Kenzari as Ishmael Gregor/Sabbac, Quintessa Swindell as Maxine Hunkel/Cyclone, Bodhi Sabongui as Amon Tomasz, Mohammed Amer as Karim and Pierce Brosnan as Kent Nelson/Doctor Fate. The film was written by Adam Sztykiel, Rory Haines an Sohrab Noshirvani. It was directed by Jaume Collett-Serra. "Black Adam" premiered on October 21, 2022.

Re-Visiting the Marvel Cinematic Universe: The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special

"The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special" (2022)

This is the second MCU feature to land under the "Special Presentation" banner. I feel like it was only a matter of time, before we got a Christmas special and giving it to the Guardians of the Galaxy just feels perfect. This special also closes out Phase Four and gives the audience a glimpse at what they can expect with "Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3."

Principal photography on "The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special" began in February 2022 and concluded in late April 2022. The special stars Chris Pratt as Peter Quill/Star-Lord, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Pom Klementieff as Mantis, Vin Diesel as Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, Sean Gunn as Kraglin Obfonteri, The Old '97's as Bzermikitokolok and the Knowheremen, Michael Rooker as Yondu Udonta and Kevin Bacon as himself. The special was written and directed by James Gunn. "The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special" premiered on Disney+ on November 25, 2022.

"One Girl In All the World" Re-Watch: "Surprise" & "Innocence"

 Buffy the Vampire Slayer

If you're a first time viewer of season two of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," you may have thought that while there have been some great episodes, that the season may feel a little rudderless. And that is fair. But here's where things really start to amp up. Let's get to it.

A Long Time Ago, in a Galaxy Far, Far Away: Tales of the Empire

Tales of the Empire

I know that this is not what I had initially said I was going to do and I promise that next time we will finish off the prequel era with "Revenge of the Sith" etc. But on May the Fourth, Disney+ decided to go ahead and drop the second season of the Tales series. And I thought, well, I just did "Tales of the Jedi" so why not do this second season right after that. Much like "Jedi" focused on Count Dooku and Ahsoka Tano, this season splits episodes between Morgan Elsbeth and Barriss Offee. I decided to do these recaps a little differently. Rather than review each episode individually, I am going to review the three episodes that feature Morgan and the three that feature Barriss. I figure that way, I won't be repeating myself as much. Let's get to it.

"I Am the Moon" Re-Watch: "I Want to Quit Being a Sailor Guardian: Minako's Dilemma" & "Usagi in Tears: A Glass Slipper for My Birthday"

 Sailor Moon S

One of the things I love about anime is that every anime fans know their favorite characters birthday. And just in case you are a Sailor Moon fan and you don't know Usagi's birthday, well now you do. It's June 30th! And, just in case you were curious, this year, Usagi will be turning 45. Let's get to it.

"Totally Schway" Re-Watch: "Splicers" & "Earth Mover"

 Batman Beyond

It's time for season two of "Batman Beyond." I feel like I was a little hard on the first season. It's not that I don't like it, it's just that I think it was kind of finding its footing in those first thirteen episodes and I think the show really starts to come in to it's own in season two. Let's get to it!

Sunday, May 5, 2024

"Finger Lickin' Good" Re-Watch: "Small Fry and Reverse Retribution" & "Idle Transfiguration"

 Jujutsu Kaisen

We get to meet the hottest guy in "Jujutsu Kaisen" in this episode. Sorry, Gojo. Sorry Sukuna lovers. It's really all about Kento Nanami. And we get to experience him in all his glory in these two episodes. Let's get to it.

Saturday, May 4, 2024

"The Truth Is Out There" Re-Watch: "Zero Sum" & "Elegy"

 The X-Files

We are heading to the end of season four. And in these episodes we get a Skinner focused episode which I'm never upset about and a re-focus on Sully's cancer as we head into the final two episodes. Let's get to it!

Friday, May 3, 2024

"We Used to Be Friends" Re-Watch: "Nobody Puts Baby in a Corner" & "Ahoy, Mateys!"

 Veronica Mars

I always forget that season two of "Veronica Mars" swings wildly. It has lots of plates spinning and you are never sure what show you are going to get from episode to episode. Again, it's not bad. It's just clear that they just decided to do everything. Let's dive back in.

Thursday, May 2, 2024

"SuperDad" Superman & Lois Recaps: "Injustice" & "What Kills You Only Makes You Stronger"

 Superman & Lois

We have reached the end of this season and we only have one more season that is left to premiere. When they announced that the show had been renewed they also revealed that the majority of the cast had been let go. The only actors that are returning as series regulars are Tyler Hoechlin, Bitsie Tulloch, Michael Cudlitz, Alex Garfin and Michael Bishop. Which means we are losing the entire Cushing family, Chrissy, the Irons Sam Lane. I'm very interested to see how that all happens since there's nothing in the finale that really sets that up. They have wrapped filming on the final season, so we will find out soon. And it has been revealed that at least Sam and the Lang Cushings will be guest starring on a few of the final seasons ten episodes. We will find out how it all goes down later this year. Let's get to it.

"To Me, My X-Men" X-Men '97 Recaps: "To Me, My X-Men" & "Mutant Liberation Begins"

 X-Men '97

It was a great twist of fate that I finished my re-watch of "X-Men: The Animated Series" just in time for the March 20th premiere of "X-Men '97." And man, it has made me extremely happy to see the love this show has gotten. And deservedly so. I am extremely excited to talk about it and geek out about it. And i'm really bummed that as of me writing this the first season is just over halfway through.    But let's get to chatting about the two episode premiere.

Re-Visiting the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

 "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" (2022)

The original "Black Panther" was not just one of the best Marvel origin movies, but one of the best Marvel movies period. Director and writer Ryan Coogler crafted a story rich in culture that told a story that we rarely see in superhero movies. So, the news that star, Chadwick Boseman, had succumbed to colon cancer in 2020 was a gut punch to many fans. We were all left to wonder how they would carry on without their titular, charismatic star. The first "Black Panther" was unique to the MCU up to that point so it makes sense that "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" would be unique as well. A movie that within the trappings of a standard superhero film told a story about grief and generational trauma that also served as a tribute to the previous Black Panther.

Principal photography on "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" in late June 2021 and wrapped in late March 2022. Production took a brief pause to allow Letitia Wright to heal from an onset injury. The film stars Letitia Wright as Shuri/Black Panther, Lupita Nyong'o as Nakia, Danai Gurira as Okoye, Winston Duke as M'Baku, Florence Kasumba as Ayo, Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams, Michaela Coel as Aneka, Mabel Cadena as Namora, Tenoch Huerta Mejia as Namor, Martin Freeman as Everett K. Ross, Julia Louis Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine and Angela Bassett as Ramonda. The film was written by Ryan Coogler and Joe Robert Cole. It was directed by Ryan Coogler. "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" was released on November 11, 2022.

"One Girl In All the World" Re-Watch: "Ted" & "Bad Eggs"

 Buffy the Vampire Slayer

With these two episodes we have reached the midway point of season two. And if you've watched this season before, you probably know that the quality of this sophomore season really fluctuates but the back half of season two, with one or two exceptions, is pretty phenomenal and tees up the series best season in season three. So, something to look forward to. Let's get to it.

A Long Time Ago Before, During and After the Clone Wars: Tales of the Jedi

Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi

The last cycle of posts I skipped over a "Star Wars" post because I was still trying to figure out how I was going handle wrapping up the Republic/Clone Wars era before transitioning to the Empire. Then, I remembered this little series of vignettes that came out a couple of years ago. The stories told here take place before, during and after the events we've already covered. It focuses on Count Dooku and Ahsoka Tano. That makes a lot of sense. They are both Jedi that became disenfranchised due to the corruption of the Senate and how the Jedi was being affected by it and being shaped it. But these two people handled that disenfranchisement in very different ways. We have six mini episodes. Three that focus on Dooku and three that focus on Ahsoka. We are going to briefly talk about and rate each one. Let's get to it.

"I Am the Moon" Re-Watch: "To Save Our Friends: Moon and Uranus Join Forces" & "A Man's Kindness: Yuichiro Heartbroken by Rei"

 Sailor Moon S

To be perfectly honest, "Sailor Moon S" isn't doing too much different than the last couple seasons, particularly at this point, but I just seem to enjoy it so much more and I'm sure that is because of the addition of Sailors Uranus and Neptune. Let's get to it.

Saturday, April 6, 2024

Re-Visiting the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Werewolf by Night

 "Werewolf by Night" (2022)

Marvel is continuing to diversify it's offerings amongst the cinematic universe, particularly during Phase Four. They have given us their first television series with this phase. They gave us their first in-continuity animated series. And now, we are getting hour long specials branded as "A Marvel Studios Special Presentation." It reminds me a lot of television specials that I watched as a kid. And the first of these specials was a Halloween themed special featuring a classic Marvel horror character.

Principal photography on "Werewolf by Night" began in mid-March 2022 and concluded at the end of April 2022. The special stars Gael Garcia Bernal as Jack Russell/Werewolf by Night, Laura Donnelly as Elsa Bloodstone and Harriet Sansom Harris as Verussa Bloodstone. The special was written by Heather Quinn and Peter Cameron. It was directed by Michael Giacchino. "Werewolf by Night" was released on October 7, 2022.

"I Am the Moon" Re-Watch: "Coldhearted Uranus: Makoto in Danger" & "The Labyrinth of Water: Ami Targeted"

 Sailor Moon S

The reason I love "Sailor Moon S" is that it is so freaking gay. And just when you think it can't possibly get any gayer, they find a way to get even more gay. And I'm completely here for it. Let's get into it.

Monday, February 19, 2024

When we last left Yuji Itadori, he was unable to reclaim his body from Ryomen Sukuna, who may be free to wreak havoc, unless fellow first year, Megumi Fushiguro, can stop him. I just need to remind you all that this show goes hard. This is episode 5. Let's get to it.

Monday, February 5, 2024

"The Truth Is Out There" Re-Watch: "Tempus Fugit" & "Max"

A character from season one is making a brief return in this mythology two-parter and a minor character meets a grim fate. Let's get into it.

Thursday, February 1, 2024

"We Used to Be Friends" Re-Watch: "Cheatty Cheatty Bang Bang" & "Green-Eyed Monster"

Lots of stuff continues to happen in season two of "Veronica Mars" and I wouldn't be surprised if at some point. you needed one of those white boards with the yarn connecting everything. And we are adding more so let's get to it.

"SuperDad" Superman & Lois Recaps: "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" & "The Dress"

"Hated and Feared" Re-Watch: "Old Soldiers" & "Hidden Agendas"

 X-Men

If this is the first time that you're watching these episodes for the first time, you are probably thinking "what the fuck is up with this animation" and that is totally fair. We will address that more with the second recap, but I needed to acknowledge it up front. Let's get to it.

"Shullkie" She-Hulk: Attorney at Law Recaps: "The Retreat," "Ribbit and Rip It" & "Whose Show is This?"

 She-Hulk: Attorney at Law

I feel like a lot has gone down Marvel-wise since my last "Revisiting the MCU" post. There have been many, many articles and think pieces declaring the MCU dead and superhero movies as a whole over, particularly after "The Marvels" underperformed. I agree that Marvel has some tweaking to do and I hope the strikes allowed them some breathing room to right the ship, particularly after parting ways with Jonathan Majors. I think we might be declaring time of dead a little prematurely here. I think it's actually great there's only one MCU movie coming out in 2024 and even better that it's "Deadpool 3." People love Deadpool and Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool. I can't imagine it not being one of the biggest hits of the summer. And I think shows like "She-Hulk: Attorney at Law" shows that there is still gas left in the tank when Marvel approaches a property from the absolute correct angle. Let's get in to these last three episodes.
