The Dolls Take on a Classic Drag Race Challenge With a UK Twist

RuPaul's Drag Race UK, Episode 3: "Posh On a Penny"

The dolls are slaying the game and they continue to do so. This episode puts a UK twist on one of "RuPaul's Drag Race" most dependable challenges. Let's dive in to the dolls do-it-yourself design challenge.

After their regular pow wow sans runway, the Dolls sashay into the Werk Room and are confronted with yet another super entertaining mini challenge. The queens are dancing around the May Pole and when the music changes they need to drop it like it's hot. The quick drag lurks are everything. Blu is a pox ridden renaissance woman, Viv has a dangling penis and balls made out of pantyhose. Baga is the only queen that gets it totally wrong with her outfit which is your gran going to a business meeting. The queens are hilarious as they get to work on the May Pole. Crystal does some truly stunning pole work that results in one of her testicles popping out. But, this mini challenge really belongs to Cheryl Hole. From the moment she shablams onto the Werk Room floor and Ru loses her mind you know that she's going to win. Sidebar, why is Ru so obsessed with shablams? Every time a queen does it she acts like she's never seen one before.

That's so Raven.
For the main challenge, the Brit Crew drive Michelle's car in with All-Star Raven on the hood. It's great to see Raven. And the dolls are gagged. Raven shows them how it's done, making the most out of her few minutes of screen time. Ru tells the dolls that they need to take materials from a car boot sale which is the UK equivalent of a yard sale and fashion couture outfits out of them. Because she won the mini challenge, Cheryl gets first crack at the materials provided and she chooses... caution tape. Mmmk. Bold choice, especially seeing as how a few Drag Race queens have made dresses out of the same material. Cheryl better hope that she can bring something new to the game, or she may find herself in the bottom for the third time. In a row.

During Ru's walkthrough it is pretty clear who is struggling. Cheryl is not doing anything new with the caution tape but she is faking until she makes it or makes it into the bottom three again. Ru is not convinced that Sum Ting is making the right decision with her structured jacket/skirt combo made out of blinds. It always surprises me when Ru is basically telling a queen what to do and they ignore it. I understand staying true to your vision, but find a way to incorporate Ru's advice into it.

The queen having the most issues is Vinegar Strokes. She is going to do stuff with toothbrushes and this and that and each idea is more horrendous and hideous as the last. When Ru visits her station, she charitably calls Vinegar's style "hodgepodge." Eek. Vinegar is clearly shook but tries to lean into it and actually create something fashionable.

Viv and Baga have a completely unscripted, non-produced "Thelma & Louise" moment in the abandoned car that is still in the middle of the Werk Room. It seems like a moment just manufactured for Viv and Baga to ham it up and the other dolls to roll their eyes.

Jidges.
Ru, Michelle and Graham are joined on the guest judging panel by Dame Twiggy, famous fashion model from London in the swinging Sixties. But who cares about her? It's all about RuPaul. Ru is slaying the game in her "RuPaul's Drag Race UK" promo look. A ruffled red mini dress and her signature blond hair swept to the side. It's stunning and Ru continues to up her fashion game. Michelle is also looking great in big 80's crimped hair with goth eyeliner and an off the shoulder black t shirt. I love Graham Norton but I'm ready for Alan Carr to be back. Alan is the right brand of irreverent humor for Drag Race UK. Sorry Graham.

The dolls hit the runway and Divina starts things off with a bang. Her Bowie inspired look is perfection. Her jumpsuit is made out of a tablecloth and I love her make up with the red band and shoulder length, middle part. The giant umbrella is a nice campy touch. Baga sells her garment but her pot scrubber mini dress isn't anything to write home about. Blu is up next and I enjoy it. Her make up is on point as usual and her pink and yellow tablecloth ensemble is well constructed and cute. Sum Ting is up next. The construction of Sum Ting's garment is pretty incredible, but the problem is that compared to everyone else it's really boring. And her decision to not wear a top under the jacket is baffling. The Vivienne brings the drama with videotape draped dress, big blonde hair and dark make up starting at her chin. Viv is a conceptual queen and brings the drama. Vinegar... seems like a nice person. Cheryl tries to sell her garment but it is nothing special. Crystal slays with a Marie Antoinette inspired look. Weird beach ball hip padding and her chest hair.

Baga and Blu are sent to safety. Divina, Crystal and the Vivienne make up the top. Divina ends up with a deserved win but I'm kind of bummed for Crystal. Cheryl ends up out of the bottom two leaving friends Vinegar and Sum Ting to lip sync for their lives. It's pretty clear from the jump that it's Vinegar's time. See ya, slag.

Another great episode of Drag Race UK and next week we get their very first Snatch Game. Let me know what you think in the comments.
