Orphan Black Re-Watch: The Girl with My Faces

"Orphan Black," Episode 2: "Instinct"

In it's second episode, "Orphan Black" continues to do the things that a great serialized drama does. It answers questions, but replaces them with even more questions. You're already hooked and they want to keep it that way. In this episode, Sarah learns more about Beth's shooting and why there are so many women running around with her face.

The episode picks up exactly where the last left off with Sarah trying to dispose of Katja's dead body. She tries to get some help from the woman who keeps calling Beth, but that is a no go. This is sort of another case of suspending disbelief as you watch Sarah go through the motions of disposing of a body. It is difficult to believe that Sarah would be so unflappable hosing down a bloody car and burying a body. The only inkling that she is maybe not cool with this or doing it for the first time is when she gags a few times. I get that they didn't want to spend too much time on this, but it would have been nice to see a little bit more of a reaction.

Sarah quickly realizes that her money is gone and Art is the one who has taken it. We do see a more volatile side of Sarah here as she flips out and takes her frustrations out on Felix's things. So far Sarah has always been in control, so it's nice to see her lose it like this and based on Felix's blasé reaction, you know this isn't the first time he's had to deal with Sarah's temper.

Sarah goes to see Art and we quickly learn about the shooting that landed Beth suspended and in need of an IA hearing. It turns out that Maggie Chen was in the wrong place at the wrong time and Beth shot her accidentally. Instead of calling it in right away, she called Art and he helped her cover it up. Naturally when Art saw Sarah with all that money, he thought she was trying to skip town and leave him holding the bag. Sarah is going to have to have give her statement before she gets any more money back.

It's rare that an actor gets to stretch their legs as much as Tatiana Maslany does in the first few episodes of "Orphan Black" and there are two great scenes here that show what a powerhouse she is. The whole section where Sarah memorizes the details of the shooting and gives her version of events is the first and her impersonation of Katja at the hotel is the other. Without saying anything, Maslany conveys how much Sarah loves the thrill of all this. She knows that in either scenario there are huge risks but she relishes those because they make the rewards that much sweeter.

After retrieving Katja's briefcase from the hotel room, she finds more medical records and more twins. She outs herself to the voice on the phone but doesn't get very far. She finds the address of Allison Hendrix written on a piece of paper on the briefcase and follows her to a soccer field. In a shed, the two women come same face to same face. This is the first scene where Maslany really acts opposite herself and it is pulled off pretty flawlessly. There is also a sense of dread as Allison alternates between threatening Sarah with the knife that she is using to continue to cut up the oranges for snacks. You wonder if maybe you're being set up and that Sarah isn't the protagonist we've been led to believe. Ultimately, Allison sends Sarah on her way with an order to return later that night.

Sarah drags Felix to his meeting with Allison and Fe's reactions to being in the suburbs of all places are the other comedic highlight of the episode. Sarah leaves Felix in the car as she heads to her meeting with destiny. Once she gets there, after some threatening, another lookalike enters the picture and introduces herself as Cosima.

We are two episodes in and a full picture of what is going on is just starting to take shape. What are you guys thinking so far? Let me know in the comments.
