Fall TV Preview: Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D

Is Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D the fall's guaranteed hit?

The new fall television season rolls on tonight, with perhaps the most anticipated show of the year, ABC's Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.LD.  It is a continuation of the popular Marvel movie franchise and picks up where last summers The Avengers left off.  So, what's this all about?  Will it be the surefire hit that ABC is banking on?  Hit the jump for more information.
The series focuses on the return on Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) who we last saw seemingly dying at the hands of Loki.  He's back and one of the series' big questions is, how?  My guess is that the Coulson we say die is an LMD, Life Model Decoy.  LMDs are used a lot in the Marvel Comics Universe, esepcially by Nick Fury.  They are used so much that one gained sentience and started calling itself Max Fury.  It could be a number of other things, but right now my money is on an LMD.

It seems like we will have two POV characters to use as our windows for what it is like at S.H.I.E.L.D for a newbie.  First, we have Agent Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), a by the book, black ops agent who isn't used to working with a team.  There is also hacker Skye (Chloe Bennet), who is recruited against her will and is obsessed with super heroes.  Ming-Na Wen's Melinda May is the veteran agent, pilot and weapons expert.  There are also nerdy, tech experts Fitz (Iain de Castecker) and Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge).  It sounds like each episode will focus on the team taking down a super powered threat that is not Avengers level.

The series has a lot going for it.  People love the Marvel movies and I'm sure it's appealing to see almost a mini one every week, rather than waiting a month.  The talent involved is amazing from the actors to the writing staff.  The series is overseen by Joss Whedon, his brother Jed, and Maurissa Tancharoen.  It could run into trouble if it isn't accessible.  There are some people who haven't seen the movies, I know, for shame!  It's true though and anyone should be able to watch the pilot and be engaged.  You shouldn't need any insider knowledge.

Reactions to the pilot have been very positive, so it looks like this will be the hit that ABC is looking for.  If it is, you can expect more Marvel television shows popping up on your screen in the coming years.

So, are you guys excited?  Did anyone screen the pilot at Comic Con?  Are there any street level Marvel heroes that you are hoping will make an appearance?  Let me know in the comments.
